Food Control Plan in Te Reo Māori
MPI provides the Simply Safe and Suitable Food Control Plan template translated into Te Reo Māori. Here is how to use it for your food business. Kupu matua: haumarutanga kai, mahere whakahaere kai, tirotiro mahana
Te Reo Māori is one of New Zealand’s official languages. As more Māori-owned food businesses grow and kaupapa Māori food enterprises develop across Aotearoa, having food safety compliance resources available in Te Reo is both practical and culturally important. Food has deep significance in te ao Māori, from marae catering to hāngi preparation to commercial kai ventures, and the compliance framework should be accessible in a language that reflects that.
Under the Food Act 2014, every registered food business in NZ needs a Food Control Plan. Your FCP sets out the food safety procedures your business follows, and your team must keep daily records to show compliance. Having these resources available in Te Reo Māori supports businesses and organisations that operate primarily in Te Reo or want to integrate their compliance work into a Te Reo Māori environment.

MPI Provides a Te Reo Māori FCP Template
MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) has translated the Simply Safe and Suitable Food Control Plan template into Te Reo Māori. You can download it from the MPI forms and documents page.
This translation covers the same food safety procedures as the English version. It allows staff and operators who are more comfortable in Te Reo to read and understand the plan in their own language. For marae-based food operations, community kai events that have grown into regular businesses, and Māori food enterprises, this is a meaningful resource.
Who Benefits From the Te Reo Māori Template
Marae kitchens operating as registered food businesses. Some marae run regular catering or food services that require registration under the Food Act 2014. Having the FCP template in Te Reo supports these operations by keeping the compliance language consistent with the environment.
Kaupapa Māori food enterprises. Businesses built on Māori values and operating in Te Reo Māori environments can integrate the translated FCP into their existing kaupapa. Food safety compliance does not need to feel disconnected from the rest of how the business operates.
Training in Te Reo. For organisations that train staff in Te Reo, having the FCP available in the same language means food safety concepts can be taught consistently. Staff learn the procedures in the language they work in, then connect those concepts to the English documentation where needed.
Day-to-Day Compliance
The Te Reo template helps with understanding your Food Control Plan, but the daily compliance tasks still require attention.
Record keeping. Your team fills in record blanks for temperature checks, cleaning logs, and receiving records. Adding Te Reo Māori labels alongside English headings on these forms can help staff who are more comfortable in Te Reo complete records accurately.
Corrective actions. When something goes wrong, it needs to be documented. If your team works primarily in Te Reo, consider creating bilingual corrective action templates so the process feels natural rather than forced into English.
Staff training. Use the Te Reo template as the foundation for food safety training. When staff understand the why behind each procedure in their own language, the compliance work becomes more meaningful and more likely to be done consistently.
Digital Tools and Future Support
The Template FCP App currently supports English and Chinese, with more languages on the roadmap. If Te Reo Māori language support would benefit your food business or organisation, get in touch and let us know. We want to build support for the languages that NZ food businesses actually need.
